How many people are suffering from Diabetes mellitus in the world? The Problem Status

The number about how many people is suffering from Diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus) in the world currently runs in millions. In the year 1985, it was estimated that about 30 million people were suffering from diabetes. The number then dramatically increased by 10 folds by 2010 and accounts for about 285 million cases of Diabetes worldwide.

Although both Type 1 and Type 2 cases of Diabetes has increased over the past two decades but the Type 2 has increased more compared to the other mainly ascribing its cause of increase due to the sedentary life style that people adopted. About 1.6 million cases of Diabetes Mellitus has been confirmed in the year 2010. Among the top countries with people having Diabetes were Naurua, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Mauritius. Coming to the US data for diabetes, in the year 2010, it was found that about 0.2% of US individuals below the age of 20 years were diagnosed with diabetes and 11.6% above the age of 20 years, whereas 26.9% of people above the age of 65 years suffered from diabetes.


Coming to the global rates, the incidence of diabetes is increasing day by day. It is associated with the increase in obesity and adoption of lifestyle that is lacking in physical activity. What will be the number of people suffering from diabetes in the future? If the current trend of increase is followed, according to International Diabetes Federation, about 438 million people will be suffering from diabetes in the year 2030.
